September Buzz: Insects to Watch—And What to Do

September is a month of change. The long days of summer begin to shorten, evenings carry a cooler edge, and many of us start looking forward to fall routines. But while we’re shifting seasons, so are the insects around us. For pests, September is a critical month of preparation—a time to gather food, secure shelter, and find ways to survive the months ahead. That makes this season especially active for bugs, both outdoors and inside our homes.

Take crickets, for example. Their late-summer songs are one of the most recognizable sounds of September evenings. While their chirping may feel nostalgic, crickets are also notorious for sneaking indoors in search of warmth and food scraps. Once inside, they can quickly become a noisy nuisance.

Mosquitoes also remain a concern throughout September. Even though many people think of mosquitoes as a midsummer pest, their populations can thrive well into early fall, especially after late-season rains leave behind puddles or standing water. These areas provide perfect breeding grounds, which means homeowners may still deal with itchy bites long after they thought mosquito season had ended.

Another insect that becomes especially noticeable in September is the yellow jacket. By this time of year, colonies are at their peak size, and food sources in nature are starting to dwindle. That’s why you’ll often see wasps buzzing around outdoor meals, hovering near trash cans, or showing up at barbecues and tailgates. Their more aggressive behavior this month isn’t random—it’s survival.

And then there are spiders. While most species are harmless and even beneficial because they reduce other insect populations, September is prime time for webs to appear in doorways, windows, and corners of rooms. Spiders are on the hunt, too, taking advantage of the abundance of insects before colder weather arrives. For many homeowners, however, the sight of webs inside the house is enough to cause unease.

September pest activity is a reminder that insects don’t live by our calendars. Just because summer is coming to an end doesn’t mean bug season is over. In fact, September often brings a final burst of activity as pests prepare for the changes ahead. That’s why this month is one of the most important times to focus on prevention:

  • Keep outdoor areas clean by sealing trash, wiping down patio tables, and removing fallen fruit that attracts wasps.

  • Reduce standing water to help limit mosquito breeding.

  • Seal small cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and foundations to block spiders and crickets from sneaking indoors.

  • Check weather stripping and screens to make sure your home stays secure against pests searching for shelter.
