Everything You Need to Know About Pillbugs

NORTH CAROLINA'S BEST LOCAL PEST CONTROL
|
Pillbugs are sometimes referred to as rollie pollies or potato bugs. The common Pillbug, Armadillidum Vulgare, lacks appendages at the tip of its abdomen and can roll itself into a closed ball. Pillbugs feed on decaying vegetable and animal matter are generally found under mulch, vegetable debris, or other objects on damp ground. Pillbugs breathe through gills. Because of this, they need to remain in damp or humid areas to survive. Pillbugs typically live two years average and five years maximum. Pillbugs generally remain outdoors and rarely infest homes. When Pillbugs are found in homes, they are usually found in damp basements, crawlspaces, and in potted plants. If there ever is a heavy infestation indoors, this generally indicates that there is a large population immediately outside the building. The key to getting rid of pill bugs is to eliminate the moist sites that make their survival possible. Because Pillbugs feed and reproduce in decaying organic matter, it may be necessary to remove plant mulch, leaves and other vegetation around the foundation of the home to bring down the population. Store firewood off the ground and away from the home. Properly ventilate basements, attics, and crawlspaces. If you are experiencing high levels of Pillbug activity around or in your home, it’s always a good idea to call out a professional pest control technician to assess the area and recommend a course of action.
